Better world: remote working

The 👑 virus has shown the western world that it’s not only possible but good for some of us to work remotely. A lot has been written about this, but here are my (most likely banal) thoughts on the issue:

Housing

We might finally see a democratisation of the housing market. It won’t be necessary or even demanded to go to an office every day and sacrifice precious living hours on commute.

Accumulation of living space around work places will hopefully be a thing of the past for office workers. Cities might finally breathe more fresh air and maybe there’ll be a mini exodus towards smaller towns and villages. If things go well, housing prices will drop in the cities while they might marginally rise outside of them.

Internet speed

Finally the countryside, towns and villages might be revitalized again as city escapees return. Due to their higher wages, if paying by living area doesn’t become a thing, and increased need for faster connections, areas formerly uninteresting to telcos might get the attention and upgrades they need. An introduction into the digital age could be around the corner for some.

What really matters

Open spaces ought to die an agonizing yet quick death. They are a downright plague and though I know they have their place, like many other things that should be used in moderation, these monstrosities are now the disgusting standard. Not only are they cheap, but managers (and other people who feel productive talking about feeling productive) love these distraction pits. Their days aren’t fulfilled unless somebody’s thoughts have been rudely interrupted by an impromptu meeting in the middle of the open space to brainstorm about nothing really.

Remote work puts a wonderful stop to that as one can simply go offline until the work is done and check messages at that point. No more interruptions by Marian smacking her fat lips as she eats her salted peanuts during a late lunch because she’s on some made-up diet plan. Or Adrian who can’t stop tapping his foot while listening to the music he has to put on, because Bethany is having a loud phone call due to the lack of meeting rooms. Who needs rooms anyway? They only hinder the team lead George from being able to march in at any minute to demand complete and utter attention from an unlucky team member, that will have to listen an inane monologue about how things are going in another team they don’t care about.

Please don’t bring back the office…. please!😭😭😭
